Today First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed Legendary Pictures and the cast and filmmakers of the upcoming feature film "42" along with 80 high school and college students from across the country to take part in an interactive student workshop. In her introductory speech, the First Lady stated, "we think that everybody in this country needs to watch this movie." The workshop explored Jackie Robinson's impact on breaking down barriers and the inspirational themes from his life that students can apply to their own. Rachel Robinson, widow of Jackie Robinson, and featured members of the cast and crew, including Harrison Ford (who plays the Dodger's executive Branch Rickey), Chadwick Boseman (who plays Jackie Robinson), and the film's director Brian Helgeland along with "42" producer Thomas Tull, interacted with the students in a two way dialog about themes and issues the film communicates to audiences. The film is being distributed by Legendary's partner Warner Bros. on April 12, 2013.

Highlights of today's workshop included:

  • The First Lady Michelle Obama said "Jackie and Rachel Robinson's story reminds us how much hard work it takes to move a country forward."
  • Thomas Tull said "42" is the most important movie Legendary will ever make.
  • Harrison Ford said "The telling of [this] story for me was a great honor."
  • Rachel Robinson said about Thomas that he made her believe and feel confident that he could make this movie. She went on to say, "He had the courage to do it."
