Legendary Acquires Social Thriller “Fresh”

Hyperobject Industries Will Produce the Project with a Targeted Fall 2020 Production Start

LOS ANGELES (July 10, 2020) Legendary has acquired Lauryn Kahn’s social thriller FRESH in a progress to production deal. Mimi Cave will direct and Hyperobject Industries’ Adam McKay and Kevin Messick will produce.

The deal marks Cave’s feature directorial debut. She began her career in the world of music videos and commercials directing films for Vance Joy, Danny Brown, Sleigh Bells, Sylvan Esso & Tune-Yards. Her shorts and music videos have garnered several awards and premiered at film festivals worldwide. Her recent short film I’m Happy, I Promise was an Official Selection for 2020 SXSW.

“FRESH lives inside the discomfort or fear many women face every day and that’s what drew me to the script. It is a raucous allegory for the commodification of women’s bodies. I want to create a visceral experience that takes the audience on a ride through a twisted world — where a woman’s instincts come into play at every turn,” said Cave.

McKay and Messick have frequently collaborated with Kahn starting with selling her first spec He’s Fucking Perfect to Fox and producing her romantic comedy Ibiza for Netflix. The social thriller genre represents a new turn for Kahn as a writer, who brought her latest spec exclusively to Hyperobject to put together. Kahn will also serve as an Executive Producer on the film.

McKay and Messick most recently produced Vice which received eight Academy Award nominations, six Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, and a DGA nomination for McKay. Their latest television series, HBO’s Succession, on which they both serve as executive producers, has garnered numerous accolades and awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series and BAFTA’s Best International Series. McKay and Messick also won the PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television-Drama for Succession and they were nominated for a PGA Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Picture for Vice.

Upcoming film projects for Hyperobject include McKay’s next feature Don’t Look Up, starring Jennifer Lawrence for Netflix.

Hyperobject Industries is represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham. Cave is represented by CAA, 3 Arts and attorneys Kim Jaime and Adam Cooper. Kahn is represented by attorney Tara Kole.

About Hyperobject Industries

The team includes McKay’s longtime producer Kevin Messick and producers Betsy Koch and Todd Schulman. Hyperobject Industries’ focus is wide ranging from comedies, dramas, horror, documentaries and documentaries-series as well as politically charged and challenging subjects with which McKay has become synonymous. Hyperobject Industries has also teamed with Adam Davidson, Laura Mayer and Sony Music Entertainment’s Three Uncanny Four Productions to develop original podcasts. Television projects include the previously announced HBO limited series, chronicling the 1980s Los Angeles Lakers and a limited series based on Miami Herald investigative reporter Julie K. McKay and Messick continue to serve as Executive Producers on HBO’s critically acclaimed and Golden Globe-winning series Succession, which will head into production this year for its third season.
